Daniel's Bungalow: Work starts!
6th March 2017

We are very excited that renovation work has now started on Daniel's Bungalow, the oldest building on our site. Daniel's Bungalow has, at various times in its long history, been a laundry, mortuary and the Warden’s home, and we are delighted that it will soon have a new incarnation as two self-contained units, a two-bedroom unit and a one-bedroom unit, replacing the one-unit bungalow. The work is expected to be completed in August 2017. Check back here to see the latest, or follow its progress on our social media.

Introduction of Parking Management on Almshouse site
1st August 2016

From Monday, 1st August, a Parking Management system is being introduced to the Almshouses site to stop unauthorised parking. All cars parked on the site must display a valid permit at all times. Any cars not displaying a permit may be liable to a fine via our Parking Management Company

Public presentation: Prime’s Close redevelopment proposal

There was a good turnout at the Almshouses on Saturday for the Trustees’ first public presentation of their proposed plans for redeveloping the bungalows at 2-8 Prime’s Close, on the Abbey Lane site. Members of the public, and residents, enjoyed the opportunity to hear about and view plans of initial ideas, and to discuss their responses with both the Trustees and the architects.

Proposal for redevelopment of 2-8 Prime's Close: Public presentation

The Almshouse Trustees are holding a public presentation of their proposed plans for redeveloping the bungalows at 2-8 Prime’s Close, on the Abbey Lane site, which are beset with long-standing significant problems, and are reaching the end of their useful life.

The bungalows were built in 1950 replacing dwellings built in 1782 which, in turn, had replaced earlier tenements built in 1400. Working with Caroe Architecture, Cambridge architects with significant experience in this type of historically-sensitive development, the trustees have been exploring options to replace the existing seven dwellings with an increased number of flats, accessible for a variety of needs. They would be designed for 21st-century living and contribute towards meeting increasing housing demands in Saffron Walden.

At this early stage, with nothing set in stone, the Almshouse Trustees wish to share their plans with the public and invite discussion on a potentially important and rewarding project.

The presentation will be at the Almshouses Chapel in Abbey Lane from 11am-1pm, and is open to all members of the public.

Renovation of Daniel's Bungalow

The Trustees are delighted to announce that a planning application has been submitted for a complete renovation of Daniel's Bungalow which will provide two units in place of the current one. Full details can be found on Uttlesford District Council's website. If the application is successful work should start later this year. The building is the oldest on our site, having been at various times a laundry, mortuary and Warden’s home, and we’re very pleased that it will now have a new incarnation as 21st-century homes.
